Warcraft 3 Mac OS X Install Guide
Here are the steps to install Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne on Mac OS X Yosemite. This guide assumes you have already installed Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos on your Mac using my youtube guide below:
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne Installation
- Download the Windows version of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne from https://us.battle.net/account/management/download/?show=classic
- Download the Full Windows Patch for The Frozen Throne from https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/classic-game-patches
- In the finder, navigate to the location you installed the original version of Warcraft III (if you followed my youtube video, it will be installed in the Applications folder in your Home directory)
- Right-click on your Warcraft III icon and choose Show Package Contents
- Double-click on the Wineskin icon
- Click Install Software
- Click Choose Setup Executable
- Choose Downloader_Warcraft3_The_Frozen_Throne_enUS.exe that you downloaded in step 1 above (usually it will be in your Downloads folder)
- If prompted, download the setup files into your Desktop folder (this step could take a few minutes depending on your internet speed)
- Install Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
- When the installation finishes, Quit the game
- Double-click on the Wineskin icon (the same you did in step 5)
- Click Install Software
- Click Choose Setup Executable
- Choose War3TFT_126a_English.exe that you downloaded in step 2 above (usually it will be in your Downloads folder)
- Install the Full Windows Patch
- When the patch finishes, Quit the game
- While still inside the package contents of your Warcraft III executable navigate to /drive_c/Program Files/Warcraft III/ and rename the Movies folder to something else (similar to what you did when installing the original game)

Hello John,
Thanks to you I have been able to get much of the installation process without much trouble. I just finished changing the executable like you show in your second video. When I try to launch the game however, I get a message that says “Warcraft III has failed to run. Please Make sure your warcraft III disc is in your CD-ROM drive and then click on retry.” Is there anyway to get around this? Or do you think I will have to order a cd?

It seems to work fine for me, but I have seen forum posts where people are having the same issue as you are. The only resolution I have found that sometimes seems to work is to completely remove Warcraft 3 and try reinstalling. However, I can’t test that because I can’t replicate your issue. Hopefully someone else who sees this post can help you out.

Thx for your tuto it works great. I just have a little problem; I would like to modify my keyboard shortcuts. I went to the folder CustomKeysSample.txt and i changed it but it doesn’t work, i keep the standard shortcuts.

i wanted to add The Frozen Throne after installing ROC, when i get to step 8 in the above walkthrough Wineskin says:
“Oops!
No new executables found!
Maybe the installer failed…?
If you tried to install somewhere other than C: drive (drive_c in the wrapper) then you will get this message too. All software must be installed in C: drive.x”
Do you have any idea why, and how to fix it ?

I am also getting the same error, but when trying to install either RoC or TFT… I don’t know what is going on, I downloaded the installers from battle.net! The installers are each about 3mb big, are they downloading corrupt, should they be a larger size?

Hi John !
Thank you very much for your tutorials, they are very useful,
however is eem to encounter a Fatal error when installing frozen throne (after i install it, i open the game and it crashes, sending me this message : This application has encountered a critical error : FATAL ERROR ! (…) this memory could not be read)
And after that i can’t even open warcraft 3 ROC, i have the same error message.
Can you help me ?

I was wondering if theres any fix for the retina display macbook pro. I tried setting the maximum res in wc3 but the game window just gets smaller.

Agreed, thanks John! Very cool to have this option but… I’m having the same problem as Nova. The best resolution I can get while still getting full screen is 800×600. Anything else cuts down the window size, including setting to my native resolution of 1920×1200. The game’s liveable but certainly not ideal.

The best option I have found is to set the in game video option at 1280x960x32. If you are adjusting the wineskin screen options choose Rootless (windowed) with Normal Windows. The game will run full screen even though it says windowed.

When i try to duplicate the process with frozen throne is says i must install WC3 first. how do i get the computer to recognize that I have?

You should be able to just double click on the wineskin application you created. By default it’s in the Applications Folder in your Users home folder.

Hey John,
i have done all the steps perfect, the game had opened up many times and i quit to go back and change the name of the movies file like you instructed. i changed the name of Movies to “MovieW”
Now when i go back and click wineskin to open the app i am immediately given a window that is suggesting i uninstall game??? what can i do to fix this?? please help asap.

My guess is that you have the incorrect windows.exe in the wineskin application launcher. Try looking at the 2nd youtube video above and see if that helps. For some reason, I think that sometime wineskin gets confused and defaults to launching the uninstall executable.

Thanks for your tutorial, it’s really well done.
I also have a little problem. I did everything you sayed in your tutorial, I coud even play after I installed the W3 update. But now when I try to run the game, he say ”this program is used to upgrade programs through Battle.net and does not need to be”. Do you have any clue to solve this?

I’ve opened the installer for Frozen throne but it only gives me 2 options. 1 saying that I need to buy warcraft 3 as its not recognising that I have already downloaded it. Do you now how i get it to recognize that warcraft 3 is already downloaded?

hey john thanks for the videos i have done the warcraft 3 chaos version but I’m having trouble with frozen throne it downloads and when the game loads it says u need to purchase region of chaos i already have it . thanks man and if u have instagram kik or anything i can contact u with to make my life easier . yeah and how do i click left button in the game if i want to click on the touchpad i can’t click left button to make the player move how can i adjust that?

i cant install warcraft: the frozen throne, i do all the steps, but when im downloading it to my desktop (step 9) it should open a window so i can install warcraft:tft. but instead i get the option, please install warcraft reign of chaos. (which i did), any sollutions to this problem?
